We Live in a Blessed Time

This long recession, which will very likely extend in the future for at least one year, but more likely 2+, is a blessing! It will force us to rethink all the things that we took for granted just 5 years ago. It will force us in a new-normal state where you can’t build your wealth today at the expense of the future. Because this is what we were doing until 2007. Spiralling consumption up to maintain growth and financing this growth at the expenses of the future. Gosh, why us, why it’s my generation the one who remained holding the baby?

Well, we have reasons to feel angry with all the people who enjoyed life at our expenses. We are not happy to pay the retirement pension to people who could retire at the same age when we become finally senior on the job, and see at least 20 years more of work ahead.

Despite this I feel blessed! I feel we are in the position to re-invent the world, how it works, how we exchange value and how we create it. I feel blessed that I am in the position to re-invent the world for my son, to give him a place where he can realize his potential, where he is not constrained by some rules that someone else designed for him.

It sounds very Utopian, nonetheless it is exactly where we stand. We have to re-invent our value system, our priorities, our objectives, if we want to survive (strive and thrive!) We have to realize that our future, each one’s future, is literally in our hands. It’s not outsourced to someone else who will decide for us. It’s ourselves who will decide what we will be doing in the near and long term. It’s each one of us who will have to decide to take our future in our hands, to decide to become an entrepreneur of oneself.

What we have to learn now, and the youngest generations are doing it already, is to recognize our individual strengths and build on them, each one for his/her own future, but collectively for our future as a civilization. Imagine the freedom of building one’s career according to one’s strengths. Imagine the sense of fulfillment coming from the ability of navigating the flow to make best use of our capabilities. Imagine the beauty of a life where abundance of uniqueness is the new normal, where you’re not fighting any more with other clones of you for a sub-optimal and scarce resource.

I believe that I’m blessed because I subconsciously felt – if not recognized – this new wave coming and I have been living with it for several years already. Living with the greatest gift of all – freedom – and realizing there’s no need to suffer for the lack of some scarce resource which is only artificially needed. Creating a future for myself where I can use my strengths for the benefit of myself and of the society, helping other people realize their entrepreneurial dreams. Helping other people recognize they can be entrepreneurs, and that after you let go the artificial need for security we were raised with, you can become exactly all that you can be, anything less.

Wishing you a very entrepreneurial year 2013!
